I brought a book with me today. You probably recognize it, right? (Show telephone book.) Sure, it’s a
phone book. This is a Norwood telephone book, so it has the names, telephone numbers and addresses
of most of the people who live in Norwood. If you live in Norwood there’s a pretty good chance your Mom
or Dad’s name and number is in here. Let’s see if some of you are in here. (Look up a couple of
Here’s another book. It’s our church directory. It lists the people in our church family. If you attend church
regularly, your name is probably in here. (Look up a few names.)
This book here is my personal directory. It lists all my friends and family. There’s my brother Jerry, my
sister Donna, my Uncle Jack.
So Norwood has a book with all the towns-people in it, the church has a book with all the church family in
it, and I have a book with all my family in it. And did you know that Jesus has his own book of names, too?
It’s mentioned in Daniel 12:1. It says, “Everyone whose name is found written in the book will be
delivered.” And the Book of Revelation tells us that it’s called the “Lamb’s book of life.” (Rev. 21:27)
So the Bible tells us that Jesus has a book that lists the names of all the people who are going to receive
eternal life. How would you like to be in that book? Well, if you have faith in Jesus and you’re striving to
please him in everything you do, your name is already in his book!
And Jesus said that’s something we should rejoice about (Luke 10:20b).
I think we should pray about that: Thank you, heavenly Father, and thank you, Jesus, that our names are
already written in your Book of Life. Help us to live our lives in such a way that other people will want to
have their names written in it, too. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
