Columbus Had Faith
Did you know that tomorrow is a holiday? Do you know what it is? It’s Columbus Day. It’s marks the
day when Christopher Columbus discovered America – and he wasn't even looking for it! He was
looking for Asia instead.

But it wasn't easy for him to get here. You see, no one else believed you could sail all the way
across the Atlantic Ocean to Asia. But Columbus believed with all his heart that it could be done.
He had faith.

So he went to the King of Portugal and said, “Will you give me some ships so I can sail across the
ocean to Asia?” The King of Portugal said, No.”

But Christopher Columbus had faith. So he went to Italy to get some ships, and they said, “No.”

But Christopher Columbus had faith. So he went to the King and Queen of Spain and said, “Will
you give me some ships so I can sail across the ocean to Asia?” They said, “No.”

But Christopher Columbus had what? Faith! So he spent 2 years trying to convince the King and
Queen to change their minds. And finally they said, “Yes.”

So off he sailed across the ocean with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta. They
sailed for over a month. The crew was getting worried. They thought they’d never get there. But
Christopher Columbus had faith.

Well, finally Columbus made it all the way across the ocean and landed safe and sound on dry
land – because he had faith!

And you know what? We need to have faith like that. We need to have faith in God. Here’s what
Peter says in 1 Peter, chapter 1, verse 21: “…and so your faith and hope are in God.”
(NIV) We need
to believe with all our heart that God loves us and is watching out for us. We need to have faith that
Jesus loves us and that he’s coming back one day.

Columbus had faith, and we can, too. In fact, we can pray for it. Let's do that now: Dear Father,
please help our faith to grow more and more every day: faith in you and faith in your Son, Jesus
Christ. We pray this in his holy name. Amen.
We need to have faith
"...and so your faith and hope are in God."
1 Peter 1:21b
(NIV)
