I was reading the Book of 1 Corinthians the other day and I came across a weird verse. Let me
read it to you: 1 Corinthians 12:17 says, “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of
Wow! Can you imagine your whole body being an eye? You wouldn't be able to hear because you’d
have no ears! You wouldn't have a nose or hands or feet!
The next verse is pretty weird, too: “If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell
be?” (vs. 17b). Can you imagine just being an ear? You wouldn't be able to smell – no nose! You
wouldn't be able to see – no eyes! You wouldn't have a mouth or a head or arms or legs. Nothing
but a giant ear!
When Paul wrote that verse, I think he knew it would sound silly. I think he wanted it to sound silly
so we’d get the point. And he tells us what the point is in verse 14: “The body is not made up of one
part, but of many.” But he’s not talking about the human body; he’s talking about the Church. He’s
saying that the Church is like a body because it’s made up of all different parts.
We know the body is made up of lots of different things like a head, a neck, eyes, a nose, ears,
hands and feet. But what is the church made up of? People! All different people doing different
things. There’s the Pastor, the choir director, the worship team, etc. And every part of the church is
important – including you! That’s right. You’re one of those parts that make up the Church.
I don’t know about you, but I’m sure glad there are lots of different people with lots of different
abilities to make up the Church. I mean, what if we were all the pastor? There’d be no
congregation! What if we were all the choir director? There’d be no one left to be in the choir.
God uses us each in our own way. Every person who sits in this sanctuary is important to the
Church – and important to God.
Let’s pray about that: Dear Father, We thank you for your Church, and we thank you for every person
in it. Help us to appreciate and love each other more and more every day. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Song: “Bind Us Together”
The Church is made up of many parts
The body is not made up of one part, but of many."
