Relying on God
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart...and He
shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5, 6 (NKJV)
A penny for each child
I have something for each of you: money! Sorry, it’s just a penny. (Pass out pennies to all of the
children.) Now take a look at your penny. Do you see the picture of someone on there? Do you
know who he is? Right! It’s Abraham Lincoln, who plays shortstop for the Houston Astros (Put
your favorite team here, of course.), right? No? Then who was he? Oh, a president. Do you
know which president he was? The first? The second? The 99th?
Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president, and he was such a great president they put his
picture on all our pennies. He was president at a very difficult time in our nation’s history; but he
didn’t lead the nation alone. He had help. Let me read you what he said in a speech one time:
“Without the assistance of the Divine Being [God] I cannot succeed. With it I cannot fail.”
So Abraham Lincoln relied on God to guide him and give him strength as he led the nation.
And the Bible tells us we should all rely on God. Here’s what it says in the book of Proverbs:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5, 6)
You see, you don’t have to be the president to rely on God; but if you rely on God, you just might
become the president of the United States!
Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, we’re thankful that you guide our path. Please help us to be careful
to follow that direction and to always stay on your path. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
