Serving others, not ourselves
"And they shall reign for ever and ever."
Revelation 22:5 (KJV)
A crown (optional)
Has anyone ever asked you what you want to be when you grow up? What did you say?
There once was a boy named Bobby who told his Mom that he wanted to be a king when he
grew up. (Show crown.)
His Mom said, “Why do you want to be a king?”
Bobby said, “Because a king can do anything he wants. I wouldn't have to clean my room any
more – because I’d be king. I wouldn't have to help out around the house any more – because I’
d be king. I wouldn't have to eat my broccoli or his Brussels sprouts any more – because I’d be
king. I could get the biggest piece of cake – because I’d be king. I could play video games all
day long – because I’d be king. I could stay up as late as I wanted – because I’d be king.”
Then his Mom said, “That does sound like fun, but being a king isn't just about pleasing
yourself. What about the people who live in your kingdom? As king, wouldn't you have to take
care of them? Wouldn't you have to make sure they were safe? Wouldn't you have to make sure
they had enough to eat? Being king would be fun, but it’s a big responsibility. A king needs to
serve his people.”
Wow! That was something Bobby never thought about.
You know, the Bible tells us that when Jesus returns to set up his kingdom, we’re going to be
kings and priests and we’ll help him rule. So, let me ask you: what kind of king would you be?
Would you be a king like Bobby who just wanted to serve himself, or would you be a king who
would serve his people? I hope we’d all be the kind of king that would serve his people.
We won’t be kings and priests until Jesus returns, but meanwhile we can practice serving
people right now. Little things like helping out around the house, leaving the biggest piece of
cake for someone else, letting other people be first in line – anything we can do to put other
people before ourselves. Then when we do become kings and priests, we’ll be ready to rule.
Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, we look forward to the day when Jesus returns and we’ll all be
kings and priests. Until then please help us practice serving others so that we’ll be ready to
help him rule. We pray this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
