To Those Who Made Us Free
(Memorial Day)
Have you ever been to a cemetery? You probably noticed that many of the graves are
decorated with flowers. And some of the graves are decorated with one of these…an
American flag.

Do you know why some graves have an American flag? Those are the graves of people who
died serving our country. They're the people who died to make sure we could be free. Free to
gather wherever we want to worship God, free to say whatever we want, free to live where we
want and freedom to do whatever we want with our lives.

We have a special holiday to honor those people who died to make our country free. Do you
know what it's called? Memorial Day.

Those people died to keep our country free, but there’s someone else who died to make the
whole world free. Free from sin, free from judgement, free from guilt. Do you know who that
was? It was Jesus! Let me read you what it says in John 8:36: “So if the Son [that's Jesus]
sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(NIV)

So Jesus sets us free. And that's something we should be thankful for every single day. Let's
thank God right now: Father God, we thank you for the freedoms we have in this country. And
we especially thank you for the freedom we have in your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray this in his
name. Amen.
Jesus sets us free
"So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed."
John 8:36
